Sheet Feed Book Scanning Process

Sheet feed book scanning is a unique way of scanning books, that is specifically interesting when looking to scan large volumes at high speed. The process involves deconstructing the binding of the book completly to transform a book into separate sheets to feed into a scanner. After going through the scanner the results are high DPI images of the pages, at high speeds.

FADGI Compliant High Speed Book Scanning

We have several production scanners, in different sizes that are FADGI compliant, with many different sorting and speed options. These scanners are able to scan pages of books at a very high quality and at a high speed.

Traditionally a lot of book scanning is done on specific book scanners or flat-bed scanners. However this is not the case with our scanners, these are high volume and high speed production scanners, which can significantly impact the speed of digitization.

Digitizing Modern Books at High Speed

Digitizing modern books can still be beneficial however to make them more accessible to more people by having a digital copy. In addition to our FADGI compliant scanners that are mentioned above we also have the JetPro Series scanners by Primagest, which are the fastest scanner/sorters in the world. The scanners can be upgraded with multiple pockets to get advanced sorting capabilities. This scanner is perfect when looking to scan large volumes at very high speeds.

AI Software for Scanning Books

Scanning the books is just the starting point when it comes to digitizing books. Once a digital image of the pages of the book is created, the next phase is to automate the document management process and enable seamless interaction with the content. AI technology simplifies and streamlines these steps, making them faster, more efficient, and highly automated. Additionally, AI introduces new capabilities to digitized books that were previously unavailable, such as advanced interactions, including "conversational" features with books. At interScan, our comprehensive AI software suite, JetStream, can help your book digitization efforts.

Older Manuscript Handwritten Recognition

Our JetStream AI software has a Recognition module that offers exceptional accuracy of over 95% in recognizing both machine-printed and handwritten text, even for historical manuscripts and books. Unlike conventional OCR solutions, JetStream leverages neutral networks and advanced AI training tailored for older texts and supports numerous languages. This allows it to achieve results that traditional methods often cannot, providing precise conversion of books into searchable PDFs or PDFs with hidden text layers.

Book Interaction (LLM)

By using a Large Language Model you can directly interact with any scanned book and ask it questions. The model works directly with the scanned material and can be automated and integrated into workflows. Examples: summarize a book, extract information like the theme of a book.

Image Quality Optimization

If the image of the book is in a lower quality, due to the method of scanning or the state of the physical book that was scanned. Then  JetStream can help optimize the image, which is key for any follow up tasks like recognition or automatic indexing of the data in the book.

Book Scanning FAQ

  • How to convert scanned books into OCR

    1. Scan the Book: Ensure each page is scanned clearly. The scanning can for example be done using a production scanning together with scanning software to create an image.
    2. Use OCR Software: Import the scanned files into OCR software or utilize specialized AI software like JetStream.
    3. Process the Images: The software will analyze the text on the scanned pages and convert it into editable, searchable text.
    4. Review and Edit: Proofread and edit if required.

  • How to scan a book

    1. Prepare the Book: Ensure the book's spine is not overly stressed, and pages lie as flat as possible. Or take the full book apart, depending on the scanner you are trying to use.
    2. Use the Right Scanner: A flatbed scanner or specialized book scanner is ideal. Alternatively, a production scanner could be used to quickly scan large volumes of taken apart books.
    3. Adjust Settings: Set resolution (300 DPI or higher) for clear results.
    4. Scan Each Page: Proceed page-by-page, ensuring proper alignment and clarity in the case that a scanner is used whereby you have to manually turn the pages.
    5. Save the Scans: This is something you would likely adjust in the scanning software settings.
    6. Post-Processing: Optionally use OCR or AI software for searchable text.

  • How to scan a book with a flatbed scanner

    1. Open the Scanner Lid: Place the book face down on the glass bed, aligning it properly with the edges or guides.
    2. Position Carefully: Press the book gently to ensure the page lays flat without damaging the spine.
    3. Set Scanner Settings: Choose the appropriate resolution (300 DPI or higher for clarity) and select color or grayscale as needed.
    4. Scan Each Page: Press the scan button and save each page as a separate file or combine into a PDF.
    5. Turn the Page and Repeat: Continue for all pages.

  • What is a book scanner

A book scanner is a specialized document scanner that is designed to digitize books efficiently. Unlike traditional flatbed scanners, certain book scanners can accommodate bound materials by capturing images from above or with specialized cradles to protect the spine and ensure accurate page capture. They often come equipped with features like curve correction, automatic page-turn detection, and high-resolution imaging to produce clear, distortion-free digital versions of books. This type of scanner is ideal for archiving, research, and digitization projects, providing a way to preserve and access books digitally.

  • Which scanner is best for scanning books

That depends on the type of books you are looking to scan, are they older manuscripts that need to be handled with care? Are you looking for a flatbed scanner? Or can the books be dismantled for quicker scanning? At interScan we have several powerful production scanners that are FADGI compliant and can scan books at a very high speed and at a high quality.
